Background: Zebrafish is emerging as a comprehensive model system in endocrinology. Zebrafish synthesise steroid hormones in the interrenal (counterpart of the mammalian adrenal), gonad and brain. Data on steroidogenic pathways is patchy and steroidogenic enzymes in zebrafish have not been well characterised.
